Jobs through fairly new companies like Uber and Lyft are going to run through an extremely short span of time. Technology is moving rapidly toward eliminating them. What has been a job employing humans will become obsolete as corporations see the chance to maximize profits and increase reliability with driver-less vehicles performing the same chauffeuring role.
REGULATORY AND GOVERNMENT INFLUENCE
Ultimately the awareness and voice of the public is going to push adoption of new technology. There will be concerns of privacy, ownership, and even classism. This new age of mobility we enter could enable changing the face of mass transit with personalized service. The biggest hurdle will be enabling equality in mobility. If the quest for profit takes a front seat progress will be slow and labor continue for those in the lower classes of society. There could be an evolution in driver-less buses but it will only come from forward thinking demand to progressive government enabling it. There already exist rail systems with driver-less trains. If the public needs to see its progressive role before its to late. Should demand come from conservative control based on fears that equality could be reached then society remains stuck with what it demanded… no demand will our no progress, and conservative control remains implanted, equality impossible without realizing I’m possible through demand at the right time – early adoption.
ADOPTING NEW TECHNOLOGY
Detroit should be questioning the M-1 Rail project with its future relative to driver-less vehicles. As a private-public system it could be nimble enough at the onset, while in construction at present, to re-address how vehicles will be equipped.
It will be interesting to see the pressures applied to public mass transit to convert to private-public partnership in order for supporting new technology through investment. Will we continue to allow society to be driven by profit or see the needs of people MUST drive progress for society.
